BEIRUT (IQNA) – A visually-impaired Lebanese woman who has memorized the entire Quran says she wants to spread the Holy Book’s moral and human message.

Fatimah Yunus, a visually-impaired Lebanese woman who has memorized the entire Quran

Fatimah Yunus, 25, is from Southern Lebanon and studies Arabic literature at the University of Lebanon’s Faculty of Literature and Humanities.

IQNA interviewed her on the occasion of the International Day of Disabled Persons.

Fatimah said she started learning the Quran by heart at the age of 15, when a visually-impaired teacher entered the institute where she was learning Quran recitation.

It took her three and a half years to memorize the entire Quran and now she is a teacher of Quran recitation and memorization herself.

Fatimah noted that she faced many obstacles on the path of learning the Quran during her disability.

She said those who are visually-impaired need audio equipment and Quran copies in braille to learn the Quran.

At first she did not have access to them, but with the grace of God, she was later provided with braille Qurans and audio equipment later.

Fatimah says, however, that this challenge continues to exist at the university as many academic books are not available in braille.

December 3, marked the International Day of Disabled Persons and this year’s motto is ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities’.

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 47/3.

According to Islam, physical and disabilities are not a punishment but a divine test.

All people are tested by God in different ways. Some are tested through their wealth, some through tragedies, and some via disabilities.

The Holy Quran commands people to be kind to people with disabilities and to help and support them.

This is also highlighted in the Seerah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
